Meta’s Hypernova Glasses Face Supply Chain Risks Amid Chinese Dependence
Meta Platforms (META) is preparing to launch its Hypernova smart glasses, yet remains tethered to Chinese supplier Goertek for critical components. The Shandong-based firm, already integral to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses and Quest headsets, has expanded its influence through strategic investments in optics manufacturers across China and the UK.
While Meta has diversified some production to Vietnam, Goertek retains a central role in its hardware ecosystem. The company's attempts to build alternative supply chains with Japanese and American partners have yet to diminish this reliance.
The Ray-Ban Meta collaboration with EssilorLuxottica has proven successful, selling 2 million units since 2023. Hypernova's innovation—a lens-embedded display for AI notifications—signals Meta's ambition for sleeker wearable tech. META shares reflect market confidence, rising 30% year-to-date.
